A life-wide curriculum seeks to highlight the potential for drawing learning from the diverse experiences that a learner may encounter during their higher education experience. Quite simply a life-wide curriculum contains more potential for learning than any other curriculum. The concept is learner-driven i.e a learner can choose or not choose to include their experiences and learning in their unique learning profile.
At the University of Surrey the development of personalised learning profiles is supported by a range of technologies (eg e-portfolios, wikis, social networking sites and other web 2.0 technologies), by a range of pedagogic processes (e.g. especially Personal Development Planning and reflective processes designed for particular learning contexts) and a range of support mechanisms (e.g. tutor/mentor conversations and relationships). Experiential learning is recognised through various recording, evaluation and validation mechanisms, external forms of certification (like the Volunteering UK Award) and Learning through Experience Certificates (for self-contained experiences). Our vision is to connect learning gained through multiple experiences through a reflective account and mentoring process to provide evidence for a University Experiential Learning Award.
