The challenge in any university is how to introduce new ideas that fundamentally change the conception of who we are and what we are doing. Its a hugely complex 'wicked problem' because ultimately people have to chose to be involved, they have to chose to make the ideas meaningful to them in their own work contexts and they have to adapt and invent new practices. All this takes considerable time, effort and willpower and its much easier to say No! I'm not going to bother. The nature of university organisations is such that this non-engagement (the easy option) is possible, indeed cultures that promote disciplinary-based research over teaching and learning positively encourage it. So our work problem is how do we inform and involve people in the development and implementation of ideas and be sensitive and empathetic to their concerns and interests, and provide the sort of practical support and encouragement that will lead to change in the directions we are promoting? This will be an ongoing debate and solutions are only likely to emerge through the process.
