The University of Surrey's 'Centre for Excellence in Professional Training and Education' (SCEPTrEis dedicated to helping people develop the knowledge, wisdom and agency necessary for learning and acting wisely in a complex world. We are inspired by the vision of a higher education that embraces whole life learning and the ideals of a life-wide curriculum. We see the educational value of learning from the many experiences that life has to offer. We believe in educational designs that seek to integrate learning through academic study, work and other aspects of life and which help people develop the habits, skills and dispositions to be successful, however they define success, in their life-wide enterprises. Developing the idea of a lifewide curriculum is an explicit action in the University's Student Experience Strategy and Action Plan. In February 2009 the University's Learning and Teaching Strategy Group agreed to undertake a feasibility study for an Award Framework that would enable learning to be gained outside the formal curriculum to be valued and recognised.
